ABOUT ABOUT

The idea for “Building Bridges, Not Walls”, occurred to David Small and Jean Anderson when they were planning David's last faculty recital at The University of Texas before his new appointments at Boston Conservatory of Music and The Longy School of Music. The political winds seemed to embolden vehement, public expressions of racial prejudice and intolerance all around them. They wanted to create a program of solidarity with their Latinx and Black sisters and brothers; a program that would be a celebration of Black and Latinx art song and experience. It includes works by Montsalvatge, Braga, Guastavino, Burleigh, Bonds, Farina, and ends with Lee Hoiby’s epic setting of Dr. Martin Luther King’s "I Have a Dream" speech. It will be presented with projected translations and photography and is about an hour and fifteen minutes including intermission. It will be live-streamed, but it is recommended as an ‘in person’ experience. This multimedia event, including music and poetry, is not one to miss.
