Move takes its name from the latest studio album from Seattle-bred, Brooklyn-based brass quartet The Westerlies. “Skilled interpreters who are also adept improvisers” (NPR’s Fresh Air), The Westerlies present this no-holds-barred body of music with their signature precision and virtuosity, and in the process craft a boldly unique sound they call their own. The centerpiece of the program is an arrangement of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, a work originally written for string quartet. The Westerlies have translated the piece from the world of strings to the world of brass, inventing new extended techniques and timbres along the way. The result is a dramatic and dynamic effort that brings new physicality and grit to this landmark work. Imbued with the spirit of improvisation and a folk-like approachability, Move presents The Westerlies at their best, cutting new trails across the vast expanse of the American musical landscape.
Before the 8pm concert there will be a Masterclass lead by the musicians, from 5-6pm in von der Mehden Recital Hall. The masterclass is free and open to the public.
The concert will be livestreamed here.
